Orange Shirt Day

Today is Orange Shirt Day. Orange shirt day is a day to wear an orange shirt to honor and remember all those indigenous children who never made it home from the 523 boarding schools across the US, and the 24 located in Minnesota.

Here’s a good resource about this day and the bigger movement of the Orange Shirt Society which comes out of some commemoration and reunion events in Canada in 2013 and the story of the significance of the orange shirt.

And here’s a link to the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition. This resource is more focused on US boarding schools and advocacy on behalf of Native peoples impacted by U.S. Indian boarding school policies. There’s lots of information here and ways to join the coalition and participate in the healing process.

And a song of mine, Yellow Bird Sings, recorded live earlier this year. At the beginning of the recording I explain the origin of the song and why I hesitate to play it live much.
